What time commitment is required to mentor a FASEB Fellow for the Future?

 

FASEB Fellows for the Future Mentors are expected to actively support mentees’ professional development throughout fellowship and society activities. Like the Fellows, Mentors will participate in onboarding activities to ensure appropriate mentor-mentee matches and uniform mentor training. In addition to bi-monthly meetings with Fellows, mentors will support Fellows in their participation in society activities and throughout the in-person leadership retreat.  Mentors are expected to support Fellows for the entirety of the 12-month fellowship, which will start in October 2024 and conclude in September 2025. 

 

Onboarding

  • Completion of an onboarding survey (30 minutes)
  • Participation in virtual onboarding session (60 minutes)
  • Completion of Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) training (2 hours)
  • Completion of DiSC self-assessment & analysis (2 hours)

Fellowship

  • Bi-monthly mentor meetings (6 hours)
  • In-person leadership retreat (2 full days)
  • Society engagement (1-2 hours/month)

Post-Fellowship

  • Program assessment interviews (2 hours)

Year 2: Member Society Engagement

 

  • Mentors support and champion Fellows’ culture change activity at a professional society event

  • Mentors also foster Fellows’  participation in professional society leadership activities, including committee meetings/leadership, opportunities to serve in speaker or moderator roles, and similar activities.

In addition to meeting the eligibility characteristics as described above, what are the characteristics of a well-qualified applicant?

 

  • Ability to foster and strengthen resilience

What does the application require?

 

  • Current résumé - No more than two pages highlighting accomplishments, honors and recognitions, leadership roles, and professional service.
  • Short Bio - (250-500 words) highlighting accomplishments, honors, and recognitions.
  • A description of your experience facilitating cultural change within an institution or organization. No more than 500 words.
  • A description of your skills or experience effectively mentoring individuals from historically excluded groups. No more than 500 words.
  • Prioritization of the following skill categories:
Individual development plans Career advising and job search preparation Project Management
Work/life balance Writing competitive proposals Professional ethics
Communication skills (effective presentations Conflict management Balancing career goals while considering current events
