What is the time commitment to serve as a mentor for a MOSAIC Scholar?
FASEB MOSAIC Mentors are expected to champion scholars’ participation in society leadership and volunteer activities. Mentors will participate in onboarding activities to ensure appropriate mentor-mentee matches and equitable mentor training. Mentors will commit to bi-monthly meetings with scholars to guide them through regular reviews of the scholars’ career development plans, the annual cohort retreat as well as psychosocial support.
Onboarding
- Completion of an onboarding survey (30 minutes)
- Participation in virtual onboarding session (60 minutes)
- Completion of Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) training (2 hours)
During Fellowship
- Bi-monthly mentor meetings (6 hours)
- In-person scientific conference (1/year)
- Annual cohort retreat (3.5 days)
- Semi-annual online forums (~10 total hours)

Year 1 and Year 2
- Establish professional development goals and needs with a MOSAIC mentor
- Take part in virtual offerings in foundational and professional skills development
- Complete course in resilience and self-advocacy
- Complete bias workshop
- Participate in 3.5 day in-person workshop and networking event
Year 3 and Year 4
- Regularly engage with MOSAIC mentor to assess progress toward professional goals
- Complete inclusion and belonging workshop
- Continue development of foundational and professional skills
- Participate in an effective grant writing workshop
- Participate in mock study section workshop
- Participate in 3.5 day in-person workshop and networking event
Year 5
- Regularly engage with MOSAIC mentor to assist with transition from mentored scholar to independent researcher
- Take part in near-peer mentoring of subsequent FASEB MOSAIC scholars
- Participate in virtual offerings in navigating academic research career progression
- Participate in 3.5-day in-person workshop and networking events
Who is eligible to serve as a mentor in the FASEB MOSAIC Program?
- Established investigators with a demonstrated interest in mentoring and knowledge on issues impacting diversity and equity.
- Membership in a full-member FASEB society is not required to participate as a FASEB MOSAIC Mentor; however, individuals who are members of full-member FASEB societies will be given priority.
What information is required to complete the FASEB MOSAIC Mentor application?
- Current résumé - No more than two pages highlighting mentorship, accomplishments, honors and recognitions, leadership roles, and professional service.
- Short Bio - (250-500 words) highlighting your mentoring accomplishments, honors, and recognitions.
- A description of your experience mentoring early-career researchers through transitional periods of career exploration. No more than 500 words.
- A description of your skills or experience effectively mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds. No more than 500 words.
